Artist asked to take down show in Bishopville

Installation at the Bishopville Opera House

Alejandro Garcia of Columbia was told Wednesday to remove his exhibition "An Alien at the Opera" from the Bishopville Opera House.
"They told me I had to come and take it down today," Garcia said.
A call to the opera house was not immediately returned.
The exhibition included an installation like work of boxes with mirrors and statements about immigrants and paintings of nude male and female figures.
"No one complained about the female nudes," he said. "I think it was too political or something."
The opera house invited him to show and he showed the staff and board images of what would be in the show before it was installed, he said. The exhibition went up about two weeks ago and was scheduled to run two more.

  1. When will they ever learn? Censoring an artist is the quickest way to assure him lots of press and notoriety.

Maybe I need to do something "shocking." Not that Garcia's paintings look to be anything near shocking.

Is the South more prudish than the rest of the country? Reckon?

  2. This sort of thing doesn't happen as often as one might imagine. (I wrote a big piece about it a number of years ago.) But part of the reason it doesn't is that work that might provoke outrage never gets close to being exhibited in the first place. - jeffrey

  3. Thanks Jeffrey for the support.

I agree with Ellen, my works are not shocking at all. I wish they could see the piece that I am putting together for the What´s LOVE show...

  4. Yeeee-hawwwwww... dem people der like culture jess fine, lessin' it got nekkid stuff in it! I'd bet a whole dollar that ONE person of influence said something, and I'd also bet that one person is profoundly ignorant about art, but knows nekkid when he or she sees it.

  5. Hey, buddy... you know you got a pecker in the that their painting? LuAnn, get these kids outta here and put some sports on tv so the boy don't turn homo!

  6. remember chris ofili at the brooklyn museum? and this was an established international artist with a large body of work. no one bothered to find out the meaning of his work and how it related to who he was before they attacked it

  7. Well, at list I am not an established international artist. : )
